Jean Durroux Housing
The specific nature of the site, a “plateau” which overlooks the city, has an exceptional view of the mountains. It firmly poses the question of landscape. How can we respond to this environment in a simple and relevant manner for a social housing project? Our proposal adopts an approach to integrate and reflect the site. It reveals the specific texture of the upper district whilst offering a continuous view of the empty spaces. The impression given by our project is plate tectonics, as if the building was a natural extension of the rocky layers sticking out above the old city. This approach gives the project its identity: it tackles the plot’s significant gradient and offers some horizontal features to reflect the landscape; it guides the eye towards the mountains in the bottom of the valley. The housing fits snugly between the large horizontal masses.
