The archeological and architectural wealth of this former monastery of Saint Gilles is the result of a fascinating and complex history. This richness must be preserved, revealed and presented in order to bear witness to the men who transformed these places during a thousand years. The building and its surroundings, associated with monastic presence until the 18th century, contain archeological and architectural treasures of great interest, such as the large vaulted room or the important remains of the southern façade. Other buildings, also valuable, have been altered or are only partially preserved; this is the case of the eastern and northern exterior elevations, some of which can only be read by expert eyes.
Taking into account this rich and complex situation, the rehabilitation project of those listed historical monuments and builing of the new museum aim at rediscovering the place, by proceeding to a strict conservation of the existing constructions, to their enhancement, and to the construction of a new stratum: the new museum. This stratum must at the same time be part of the history of the monument, and reveal it...
